SUMMARY:Active Shooter (PowerPhone)
DESCRIPTION:Active Shooter Incidents for Public Safety Communications \nActive shooter incidents and the response to them pose several unique concerns for all facets of public safety including public safety communications. Many issues make responding to an active shooter incident more difficult than other armed subject calls or violent in-progress incidents. These types of incidents historically have garnered extensive media coverage and public scrutiny and have become a pertinent threat to public safety. As with any other type of emergency situation\, the telecommunicator plays a vital role in the response to active shooter incidents.

SUMMARY:Hostage Negotiations (The Public Safety Group)
DESCRIPTION:Hostage Negotiation \nThe FBI now recommends that communications professionals receive hostage negotiation training. Many hostage-incident contacts with law enforcement begin when the hostage taker calls 9-1-1. It is critical that the person who answers this call is trained. This class will prepare attendees to answer the call.

SUMMARY:Crisis Intervention (The Public Safety Group) Copy
DESCRIPTION:When a person is in crisis\, the telecommunicator many times will be the first person to respond. This class provides you the tools you need.  Communications personnel are often the first to deal with a person in the midst of a crisis. We recognize emotions\, not rational thinking\, are the driving force that alters behavior and actions of the person in crisis. Many times\, these calls are for barricaded individuals\, mentally ill people in crisis\, suicidal persons\, domestic violence situations or even hostage situations. Your words and actions will most likely set the tone for the remainder of the call. This course is designed to teach and arm communications personnel with effective communications skills to not only get the needed information from the caller but also teach them how to use verbal communications skills to lower emotions and de-escalate the situation. This will aid in making the scene safer for your emergency responders\, with the ultimate goal of a peaceful resolution. The course includes information on the Understanding of the Mentally Ill and tips on how to deal with them during an episode or break down. This course is a must for all 9-1-1 telecommunicators and their supervisors.

SUMMARY:DENISE AMBER LEE TRAGEDY
DESCRIPTION:Nathan Lee\, founder and President of the Denise Amber Lee Foundation\, and Geoff Weiss\, dispatch supervisor for the San Diego Sheriff’s Department tie together the elements of the Denise Amber Lee tragedy. A positive and uplifting presentation\, students will learn of the obvious failures that day to the more in-depth concepts such as leadership\, hiring\, training and encouraging employees in a communications center. \nThe Denise Amber Lee Foundation was launched in June 2008 as a result of the January 2008 tragic abduction and murder of Denise. The Foundation is a non-profit initiative of Denise’s widowed husband\, Nathan\, who felt the need to honor the memory of his beloved wife. The amazing response of the community and individuals to this senseless tragedy touched Nathan and his family so deeply that he felt compelled to return that support by helping improve the 911 system.

SUMMARY:REWIND
DESCRIPTION:PowerPhone’s Rewind course has been developed to prevent or relieve many of the emotional pitfalls that filter into the Communications Center. When problems are evident\, it may lead to employee regression\, frustration\, and sometimes depression. Left unattended\, these factors impact performance and wholesome human relations. The course is formatted by the instructor\, who felt the burden of many mistakes and blamed the system. Taking into account the “blame game\,” he lost much of his ambition for taking on responsibility. \nThis course will provide public safety personnel with a clear focus on individualization as it pertains to the overall status of “self.” Telecommunication professionals often become disillusioned and lose focus on their obligations. Most importantly\, some individuals have a tendency to contaminate co-workers within the work environment\, which proliferates back to those closest to them. This course serves to help change behavior before it’s too late for the individual worker and/or agency.
